To promote the settlement of new companies and support existing ones, the business development organisations of Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Niedersachsen, and Schleswig-Holstein have joined forces in the green hydrogen initiative HY-5. This collaboration positions Northern Germany as a leading region for green hydrogen in Europe, offering solutions along the entire value chain.

For 30 years, Northern Germany has been at the forefront of hydrogen research, supported by strong networks at the economic, scientific, and political levels. The region benefits from unique locational advantages, including the highest generation capacities for onshore and offshore wind power, underground formations for hydrogen storage, and efficient seaports with logistics and import terminals for green hydrogen and synthetic energy carriers. Additionally, a strong network of maritime companies and research institutes with expertise in innovative energy carriers strengthens the region’s capabilities.

Backed by the German Government and the EU, Northern Germany is home to 60+ leading projects, making it the most powerful cluster for green hydrogen in the country, and possibly in Europe. With industrial companies that have a high hydrogen demand, the region is well-positioned as a key European hub for green hydrogen with promising future prospects.
