The Hydrogen Hub Aachen was initiated in 2021 by the the City of Aachen, the City Region of Aachen, the districts of Düren, Euskirchen and Heinsberg as well as the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Aachen (IHK Aachen) with the goal of accelerating the ramp up of the regional hydrogen economy. The project is supported by the AGITmbH.

 The technology region Aachen is characterized by a unique application-oriented research infrastructure. Decades of innovation transfer have resulted in an ecosystem of agile, innovative, technology-oriented companies, active in the value chains of various industries, alongside renown research facilities. Thus, the potential for new business models is considerable in the emerging hydrogen value chain. We strive to position our SMEs as technology providers and connect them with relevant research institutes.

 Today the Hydrogen Hub Aachen network consists of more than 350 members from industry, research and development, and administrative bodies. The companies in our network cover the full hydrogen value chain – from green energy developers, companies that build electrolyzers to potential end users that need the green molecules to decarbonize their operations.

 Historically, as the Aachen region is characterized by a high density of energy intense industries, such as one of the largest paper industry clusters in Germany, copper-, food-, and glass industry. These industries need green molecules to achieve decarbonization. It is one of our aims to facilitate the required infrastructures for the switch from fossil fuels to renewables.

 To achieve energy supply security of green hydrogen for our companies, we are also working hand in hand with initiatives and administrative bodies in the neighboring regions of the Netherlands and Belgium.
