Hydrogen Metropole Ruhr (HyMR) serves as the central coordination office for hydrogen initiatives in the Ruhr region. Established in 2022 by Business Metropole Ruhr GmbH, our mission is to position the Ruhr metropolis as a leading model region for hydrogen in Germany and thereby become the nucleus of the H2 market ramp-up. We foster collaboration among stakeholders from business, science, politics, and civil society to drive joint projects and advance climate neutrality.

HyMR actively supports the establishment of a hydrogen model region by promoting H2 projects and strengthening the entire hydrogen value chain. Our efforts include enhancing transparency in the H2 landscape, strengthening recognition of H2 activities, and building networks with local and international partners, as well as promoting the improvement of the region’s H2 infrastructure.

The Ruhr region is experiencing a remarkable market surge driven by several factors. Firstly, the region boasts Europe’s densest natural gas network which facilitates energy distribution. Secondly, by 2040, it aims to generate one-third of Germany’s hydrogen demand. The region’s diverse uses for hydrogen span the chemical industry, heat-intensive industries, and logistics. Furthermore, cutting-edge H2 research across 20+ institutions contributes to its prominence. Notably, the Ruhr metropolis ranks among the global top 10 regions for patent applications related to the hydrogen economy.
